New York 2006

From the Statue of Liberty to the Empire State Building

Vinzent surprises us with a special American breakfast. Well-fed, we head to the supermarket around the corner to pick up food (breakfast) for the next few days.

After that, we walk to the banks of the Hudson River and take in the skyline. From there, we take the PATH to the World Trade Center, where we visit Ground Zero.
On the way to the Staten Island Ferry (Battery Park), we make a quick detour to the World Financial Center (huge palm trees in the lobby).

We’re not going straight to the Statue of Liberty, since we’ve read too many times that it’s not worth the time, especially when you only have 5 days.
So we’re taking the ferry to Staten Island, which passes right by the Statue of Liberty every 15 minutes and is free.
On the return trip, you get a great view of the New York skyline.

Back in Manhattan, we’ll head down Pearl Street toward the New York Stock Exchange and Wall Street. Along the way, we’ll walk through the skyscraper-lined streets of the Financial District. We’ll then walk down Wall Street toward Broadway and come right to Trinity Church.

Now we’re doing something not quite so smart. We walk down Broadway to the Empire State Building (6.2 km). We pass the Woolworth Building, cut through SoHo, and turn onto Fifth Avenue at the Flatiron Building. SoHo is a truly vibrant and interesting neighborhood, which is especially evident in the shops.

By the time we reach the Empire State Building, dusk is already falling. We decide to postpone the ride up for another day, since, first of all, there are too many people in line, and second, it’s neither light nor dark.

From 36th Street, we take the PATH back to Jersey.
Since our "New York" friend had his birthday a few days ago, he's celebrating it with others today. So we freshen up and head to the party around 9 p.m.

At some point in the middle of the night (I think it was around 1 a.m.), we headed back to Manhattan with the other party guests to go to a club. Unfortunately, they were all so packed that we would have had to wait in line forever. In the end, we ended up at a music bar that had absolutely no big-city vibe.

Somehow, we made it back to Jersey in the early morning hours and went to sleep for a few hours.
