New York 2006
Upper Manhattan
Vinzent is flying to Tallahassee (in northeastern Florida) today to visit friends from his college days.
Andreas, René, and I are heading back to Manhattan around 10 a.m.
There, we split up. Andreas goes on a big shopping spree, while René and I take the MTA Subway to Brooklyn and then walk back to Manhattan across the Brooklyn Bridge. The bridge, with its many cables and a great view of the skyline, is definitely worth the roughly 1.5-mile walk.
Once we reach the other side, we take a stroll through the small neighborhoods of "Little Italy" and "Chinatown."
Afterward, we meet up again with Andreas near City Hall and take the MTA subway to 58th St.
Andreas, with René’s help, continues his shopping spree on 5th Avenue, while I explore Central Park. Unfortunately, my feet are about to burst, so I have to sit down on a park bench every now and then to give them a rest.
When I finally made my way to the Guggenheim Museum, I couldn't believe my eyes. Where is it???
They’ve actually completely covered it in scaffolding from the outside to renovate the facade. So all that’s left for me is a quick peek into the lobby and the long walk back.
We’re meeting around 6:30 p.m. on 36th St., where Stefan works and has kindly brought along the camera tripod we’ll need for the night shots.
But before we head to the Empire State Building, we have to make a quick stop at Macy’s to buy a suitcase.
Shopping in New York seems pretty nice ;-)
By the time we arrive at the Empire State Building, it’s already almost 8 p.m. and dark. We’re lucky and only have to wait in line for about half an hour (admission: $18) before taking the elevator up to the 86th floor. The elevator is so fast that it only displays the floors in increments of ten. So now we’re standing on top of what is currently New York’s tallest building. The view is simply fantastic. We stay up there for about 45 minutes.
Even though my feet are really hurting now, I want to go back to Times Square and take a few photos with a tripod at night. Speaking of tripods, we weren't allowed to bring ours up to the Empire State Building — security sucks.
Well, anyway, I can still take photos at Times Square, and then we’re off to New Jersey.
