Long Island

Beaches at Long Island

We start our last day. Since our flight doesn't leave until 9:55 p.m. and we are only a few kilometers away from JFK Airport, we can still make the most of the day. In my mind, I had planned a beautiful, sunny day on the sandy beaches of Long Island. The sandy beaches were there, but unfortunately so were the remnants of Hurricane Jose. So it was very windy and rained quite heavily from time to time.

However, we caught a dry spell and walked to the Fire Island Lighthouse. At the lighthouse itself, the weather service employees were amazed that we had ventured out in such weather and told us that they hadn't seen such high waves here in a long time.

To get to Fire Island, we first drove to Jones Beach Island. There are sophisticated beach resorts here, but they have already said goodbye to summer. Nevertheless, we took the time to look around a bit.

Queens

...or Flushing Meadows, to be precise. Why Flushing Meadows? Because we wanted to see if the cockroach from Men in Black really did clear the Unispere with his spaceship ;-)

Since it's still raining and it's now coffee time, I look for a café nearby. The Elite Cafe is a kosher café right on Main Street in Queens, and the cake was very tasty.

Luckily, it has stopped raining and we can still see the former site of the 1964 World's Fair. Next door, of course, is the tennis complex where the annual US Open is held.
